My name is Mary and I want to introduce myself. I have stress and depression, and had to give up a job as an advocate for low income, and disabled members of the community.
Because of my symptoms I learned a huge amount about how it felt to have a disability, deal with others, and have symptoms that directly impacted on my life.
I have since trained as a coach which will help me to work at home and keep my stress levels down.
I grew up with 2 family members with physical disabilities, and want to be involved in ways that will build communities of support and knowledge for people with disabilities.
I am reallt pleased to find ILWAD

Hi Mary,Tessa here again! I wanted to welcome u, since u introduced yourself in here. may I suggest u to also become a member of the ’psychologycal disabilities’ little group? I’m in there as well, though my ’problem’ is, better said, are ’bi-polar’ and ’obsessive/compulsive’ disorders. Besides the stroke of course………I have so to speak, a real handful….haha!!
I live in italy and i’m probably the only italian or european around here, but who cares? as long as we can be supportive towards one another and get a hand when we really need it, even if it can only be a cyber-hand….well, I think it’s perfectly fine! I’m 52 mother of two, boy 22 girl 15, ex- husband remarried for the 3rd time in 2007 stroke hit me in 2008 i’ve been back in Milan near my family of origin since 2001, with the kids of course. I’ve been working till I got this damn stroke, life changed a lot for the better, a lot for the worse…..I could write a book here ………..don’t worry though, I’m pretty much done. Just wanting to let u know there are lots of nice people here, and I for one but I’m sure the others too, will be glad to exchange opinions, open up a bit well, in a word, chat with those people that most can understand the ordeals we’re going through daily. Bye for now, Tessa

        Thanks Tessa,
I could write a book too, but I am waiting for the ending haha. I live in New Zealand and not sure if I am the only Kiwi? I will join the group you suggested. Meet you there!

        Keep in touch,
        Mary

For those of you who regularly comment on our members Disability news articles, thank you.

Some of your know that the comments at the bottom of the articles, when made, are held for moderation and approval before they are published live.

This is done ONLY to monitor the naughty SPAM robots that prey on blog and sites like ours – they post fake link based auto messages by the masses if left uncheck. We never have or ever would edit for any reason comments that are legitimately made by our audience and members.

As of today, I have made some change to the system. It’s pretty simple.

If you have made a previous comment on any article in the past, as you make the comment, they are per-approved.

A long conversation for something so simply, just thought some of you might want to know as there has been some confusion in regard and several members have asked me personally via email.

    Happy Tuesday,

    Ron

Hi everyone, my name’tessa and I suffered from a severe hemorragic brainstem stroke July 2008. I was in a coma near death experience they call it, and I guess they’re right. They are the doctors. And they didn’t think I would have come back but guess what, I did. I am 52 now was in a rehab clinic for 10 months, couldn’t breathe, see, hear, swallow, talk or move. well now I finally can eat and drink again, breathe, vision is impared but i can still see somehow, hearing isn’t as bad anymore, I learned to talk again, but I totally lost my balance and I cant walk more than a couple of steps with somebody’s help. But I’m here. Cant work or drive anymore, bu6t I’m here and I can still think straight.oh sorry I forgot to say I’m Italian, live in Milan and speak almost 5 languages. would you like to befriend me?

      Hello there :D
I also had a stroke long time ago when I was in my teens (11 years ago). It was pretty hard trying to catch up with the other students instead of falling behind in school.
I still have some trouble on English (mostly grammar and complicated words) and I’ve been having trouble understanding things sometimes, especially when communicating with someone in person face to face. I seem to be slow at following people’s instructions when they tell me to do something. I haven’ had any physical difficulties (I’ve been fine walking), but I’ve also lost part of my vision. I ended up having a short attention span and it’s been hard to pay attention what people are saying. I’m unsure what’s hemorragic brainstem mean, is it somewhere under the brain? I think my stroke might have happened in the broca area (speech area), unsure.

hi Jennifer, thanks for answering me! There are 2 types of stroke: one caused by a clot of blood that blocks the blood flow. Then there is mine, which was caused by a very thin vessel that tore, causing the blood to flow out around the area. the brain is composed of 6 different parts and the part that was hurt in my case is the brainstem, which mainly controls the movement as well as the basic functions of our body. u can find out more on wikipedia or google if u want. Even though we did experience different things, i’m very happy you answered my call, so to speak. I checked all groups and managed to find some that could suit me but i haven’t found any group specifically about strokes. maybe you also want to join the group for the visually impared, I forgot the specific name for that group. I signed up there too cuz I think i could possibly profit from other people’s comments, as well as talk about my experience.I don’t know you, but I
can’t drive my car anymore cuz the right eye is blocked while a pendular nystagm affects my left eye. people think i’m just crossed eyed but it’s a lot more complicated than that! What about you? BTW, would you like to befriend me?

        • Avatar Image
          Jennifer H · 4 months, 2 weeks ago

          Hello again, tessa :D
Sure, I’m interested to join the group for the visual impaired if you know which website I should go to ^_^

Hmm, I think I haven’t heard much about thin torn vessel strokes before. The one that I had was a blood clot on my left brain. I’m unsure how did that happen, the doctors weren’t sure also and said it might have happened when I was born o_O.
And same with me, the doctors told me it’s too dangerous to drive because of my part blindness.

So is it like your right eye is blind, but your left can see except it has pendular nystagm affects? For me when I see straight, both of my eyes can’t see half (or a 1/3rd of a pie) on the right. I can still see things when my eyes move and look on the right side, but when I move and look on the left side, most of my vision looks blurry.

I think the thing that’s been giving me the most amount of trouble after my stroke was my aphasia. I can share you somethings about my aphasia experiences after having another reply from you ^_^ (so I won’t have to feel like I’m typing too much, blahahaha! ^_^)
          PS: I befriended you :D
and I’m happy too that it’s interesting to share similar stroke experiences to each other :D :D

Ifyou want to find out more about my stroke (hemorrhagic stroke) you’ll find info on wikipedia or google.
Your kind of stroke I know too well cuz my mom had 2 about 6 or 7 years ago.though she was an old lady already, being now 82……I was 49 at the time 52 now…….way too young………….coping with reality can be very difficult at times…………HEY! Oh, thank you Ron :D I’ll look at some of the chats on that group site sometime ^___^

      Hello Tessa again :D !
No worries ^__^ u can take ur time, I’m sometimes slow at replying :P

NEAT that you’re an artist too :D ! Have you been an artist since you were young? Also what kind of art things do you do? :D
I use to be more of an oil painter but I haven’t been painting for a while.

One of the aphasia experiences that I’ve had is when for some reason I often feel like I need a hearing aid cuz I feel like I have trouble hearing what people are saying. But when I went to see my hearing doctor, he said my hearing was excellent (but maybe the hearing test was easy cuz I was sitting in a quiet room and hearing ”can you say ’cat, can you say ’hammer’, can you say…” etc)
But a bunch of times when some people talk to me I sometimes hear words that don’t match what they said, like when someone said ”parmesan cheese”, I was hearing ”bull horn trees”, or when someone says ”extension cord”, I heard ”stitching board”. Maybe because I have trouble focusing what someone’s saying and end up hearing something else maybe, or cuz of the background noises or daydreaming thoughts that distract me. Have you or ur mom had this kind of aphasia experience before or no?

Also I’m 25 by the way ^_^, I think this year I’ve finally been able to communicate with new people from stores on a phone (like ordering food or booking to have a hair cut, etc). I was having like phone anxiety for many years when talking to people that don’t know about my aphasia.

You can check out this example that shows the way I often hear when people talk a lot to me or when I watch movies and stuff (except without that weird radio noise in this sample): http://aphasiacorner.com/aphasia-simulations/listening-impairments-simulation-2.html

And yes! I think I like the coldness than the hotness, I don’t like creepy big bugs crawling around in the house! O____O

      BYE BACK!! :D ^__^

Hi everyone….I am a 55 year old lady that just joined and thought I would introduce myself. I was born with knee caps on back side of knees and from knees down, they were backwards along with club feet. At the age of 4 years old. I was in the hospital for almost 7 months and had 7 major surgeries on both knees to be corrected and ended up walking out of the hospital. I was also born deaf and few years ago, had a cochlear implant surgery and now able to hear which is really awesome! Over the period of years growing up, I developed arthritis in knees and ended up having total knee replacements in both knees and finally am pain free for the time being. I was a manager for school cafeterias for almost 17 years and was forced to retire early and start drawing disability checks. Now that I have been on SS for a few years and had my knees ”fixed”, I am wishing I can work, but the amount of SS and disability I get, there is no way I can go out and work and be able to make enough money to cover all the expenses I have plus to be able to get medical insurance for myself. I am just better off staying home to draw SS and disability. I just wondered if there is any others that is pretty much where I am and how to deal with it? Thanks so much!!

I alway been an overachiever when I was growing up, I prove to my teachers I can do things that they didn’t think I couldn’t do,,( live on my own, drive my own car, manage my bills. I am in the process of looking for a job and working with voc-rehab. I do have a question, I have a profile picture I want to put up but it said to big? How do you downsize it on here?

There is a maximum files size that can be uploaded Shelby. Most often, you can save from your Facebook profile or alike. Is that a possibility. File size is limited for security reasons.

I have been gone a week or so due to the snow storm and losing power. What I am seeing below is rather impressive. I would like to thank all members, new and old for reaching out to each other, making friends and creating some great conversation.

I know it is often pretty quiet here, as we are still growing and a small project and website, it is great to see the community come together and pick it up a bit.

As you know, we have just a select handful of dedicated volunteers here, we can only do so much, I thank you guys for your help and support of each other and the project.
