Michelle Carston: Resiliency

Recently, I watched a documentary on The Learning Channel, Paralyzed and Pregnant, 4 Years Later. The woman documented in the film, Michelle Carston, was 23 and on vacation when she was injured, leaving her with a permanent C5 injury. Paralyzed and Pregnant, 4 Years Later is the story of her life as a woman, as a mother, and as a human being, who just happens to be a quadriplegic.

Wandering Wheelchairs

I recently had cause to use a wheelchair (and may I note for the record, it had a very pretty red flag on top). Due to pride, major insecurity and vulnerability I have stubbornly refused the aid of a wheelchair, preferring to walk as much as possible, which leads mostly to my detriment. The first and only time I used a wheelchair I encountered many stares and whispers.

I recently had cause to use a wheelchair (and may I note for the record, it had a very pretty red flag on top). Due to pride, major insecurity and vulnerability I have stubbornly refused the aid of a wheelchair, preferring to walk as much as possible, which leads mostly to my detriment. The first and only time I used a wheelchair I encountered many stares and whispers. I found it on the whole, a very upsetting experience. Prior to this, I have given very little thought to the day to day emotional aspects facing people in wheelchairs. We take it for granted. I know I will never do so again.

AirTran fined for its handling of passengers in wheelchairs

The U.S. Department of Transportation finedĀ AirTran Airways $500,000 for violating laws on handling passengers who must use wheelchairs.

In the enforcement action announced Monday, the DOT found that:

* A review of AirTran’s records indicated that it had “a significant number of apparent violations” of the Air Carrier Access Act.* “A small number of these complaints appear to involve egregious violations…”
